Love comes in many forms. This month, you can show love to displaced women and their children in Greece by making specific donations supporting them.
With this first blog article of a series of three, we’d like to introduce you to our laundry programme:
At our Amina Day Center, our clients can wash their clothes for free — this is one small but very needed service since they often don’t have access to washing machines or can’t afford to use them. Every woman has the right to wash one load per week. If there are free spaces, sometimes they even wash several loads.
We’re able to offer the laundry service to around 60 women. Around 100 loads per week are being washed. Maintaining this service is associated with the following costs for SAO: electricity prices, detergents, maintenance and, right now, the urgent need to replace a broken washing machine.
It’s been a few years since the energy costs in Greece were so high, and many people struggled to pay their bills. The electricity to run our washing machines costs us around €100 monthly, meaning €1’200 yearly.
Our detergent costs are around €40 per month, therefore a bit less than €500 per year.
Additionally, we must cover the costs of the water used and the amortisation of other materials used. Also, one Team member of the Amina Team is involved in preparing the schedules and kept busy supervising the laundry programme. These two parts also make around €900 per year.
As we were preparing for this post series, one of our washing machines broke down. Its replacement will cost us another €600 - €700 this year.
All in all, the cost of the Amina Laundry Programme will be around €3’200 in 2025.
